The Oil & Gas UK Next Generation Conference ’09 provided a platform for
people in the early stages of their career, from across a range of
disciplines, to gather and debate the next generation’s views and
expectations on current and emerging issues facing the industry.
There are still 25bn barrels of oil to be extracted from the
North Sea.
However
to recover these we will need to overcome technological challenges, increase
operational and capital efficiency and attract billions of pounds worth of
new investment. It is the next generation, the young professionals of today
from across the sector, who will lead the way in the future. In their
hands will lie the responsibility to ensure our industry maximises its
resource recovery, making its vital contribution to the UK’s security of energy supply while at the same
time capitalising on the international export opportunities for UK
oilfield goods and services.
To succeed we will need to attract, develop and retain the best of the best
- the next generation of managers and leaders.
Building on last year’s Oil & Gas UK Next Generation conference, we wanted you
to tell us about the kind of oil and gas industry you would like to work in.
We wanted to know
how you plan to fulfil your ambitions while at the same
time ensuring the long-term sustainability of the
UK’s offshore oil and gas industry.
The conference themes were:
-
Flexibility
- in the workplace to accommodate new ideals and changing attitudes
-
Success
- finding the right formula
for individual and company success
-
Engagement
- with society … what is the industry’s most important role?
In
order to establish some basic demographic information about the audience and
find out what delegates really thought about various statements relating to
Generation Y electronic voting technology was used throughout the day. In
addition, this technology was utilised to gain some initial feedback on the
conference and its findings. Click

The ideas and feedback generated
at the conference were analysed by the Next Generation Task Group. Through
additional research, the information was developed into two proposals aiming
to improve the industry’s strategy to attract, develop and retain its
current and future young professionals. Click

was presented at the
Offshore Europe breakfast briefing.
