Next Generation: The oil and gas industry I want to work in

To find out what Oil & Gas UK’s Next Generation Conference was all about, watch the next generation taster debate here. In this video podcast, Jessica Burton is discussing the future of the oil and gas industry with Malcolm Webb, chief executive, Oil & Gas UK; Emily Ferguson, geologist; Maersk Oil North Sea U.K. Limited; Claire MacKinnon, communications officer, Technip; and Bob Keiller, CEO of PSN.

The Oil & Gas UK Next Generation Conference ’09 provided a platform for people in the early stages of their career, from across a range of disciplines, to gather and debate the next generation’s views and expectations on current and emerging issues facing the industry.

There are still 25bn barrels of oil to be extracted from the North Sea.
However to recover these we will need to overcome technological challenges, increase operational and capital efficiency and attract billions of pounds worth of new investment. It is the next generation, the young professionals of today from across the sector, who will lead the way in the future.  In their hands will lie the responsibility to ensure our industry maximises its resource recovery, making its vital contribution to the UK’s security of energy supply while at the same time capitalising on the international export opportunities for UK oilfield goods and services.

To succeed we will need to attract, develop and retain the best of the best - the next generation of managers and leaders.

Building on last year’s Oil & Gas UK Next Generation conference, we wanted you to tell us about the kind of oil and gas industry you would like to work in.   We wanted to know
how you plan to fulfil your ambitions while at the same time ensuring the long-term sustainability of the UK’s offshore oil and gas industry.

The conference themes were:

  • Flexibility - in the workplace to accommodate new ideals and changing attitudes

  • Success - finding the right formula for individual and company success

  • Engagement - with society … what is the industry’s most important role?

In order to establish some basic demographic information about the audience and find out what delegates really thought about various statements relating to Generation Y electronic voting technology was used throughout the day. In addition, this technology was utilised to gain some initial feedback on the conference and its findings. Click here to view the results.

The ideas and feedback generated at the conference were analysed by the Next Generation Task Group. Through additional research, the information was developed into two proposals aiming to improve the industry’s strategy to attract, develop and retain its current and future young professionals.
