Hydrocarbon releases
Following the challenge
by the Health and Safety Executive to substantially improve performance
regarding hydrocarbon releases, UKOOA (now Oil & Gas UK) established the
Hydrocarbon Release Reduction Work Group in 2000. Its aim was to focus
industry efforts not just in making a step reduction over a three-year
target period but to promote a ‘no leak culture’ which would be sustainable
for the long-term future of the industry.
Over a three-year period
this Work Group helped develop and collate a collection of good practice
techniques and best practice guidelines aimed at assisting operators in
their efforts to reduce releases. These were used to create the Hydrocarbon
Release Toolkit, which provides a central reference to
managers, supervisors and the workforce.
The sustained
implementation of these good practices should considerably improve asset
integrity and the reduction of hydrocarbon releases. HSE and the industry
continue to monitor hydrocarbon releases and aim to reduce them by 10% each
year.
Fire and Explosion
Guidelines
The
Fire and Explosion Guidance project was a joint project between UKOOA (now
Oil & Gas UK) and the HSE to update guidance on the prevention, control and
mitigation of fires and explosions from hydrocarbon releases on offshore
platforms.
This guideline has recently been published and is available for purchase
from our
publications section.
